Ernest Hemingway, a passionate lover of Spain, he visited Spain on numerous occasions throughout his life. He was fascinated by Spanish culture, its people and its traditions. He was especially attracted to bullfights, to which he dedicated much of his work.

Calpe, a shelter for Hemingway
In the 1930s, Hemingway discovered Calpe, a small fishing village that would become one of his favorite places in Spain. He stayed at the Parador de Ifach, a hotel with views of the sea and the Peñón de Ifach. From there, he explored the surrounding area, enjoyed the local cuisine, and devoted himself to writing.
The Parador de Ifach has a history, other famous people such as Hemingway, Azorin, Iturbi, Oscar Esplá, Gabriel Miró, Florian Rey, Raf Vallone, Jesús Hermida, Carmen Sevilla, stars such as Orson Welles, Ava Gardner, Gregory Peck, Bette Davis and Geraldine Chaplin, academics such as Pedro Laín Entralgo and even the Prince of Prussia have stayed there. The Peñón de Ifach, Hemingway’s rock
The Peñón de Ifach, an imposing rocky outcrop rising above the sea, became one of the symbols of Calpe and a source of inspiration for Hemingway. The writer referred to it as “our rock” and spent hours contemplating it from his room at the Parador.

Hemingway’s mark on Calpe
Although there is no evidence that Hemingway wrote any of his works in Calpe, it is believed that his experiences in the town influenced his writing. In his novels and short stories, references can be found to landscapes and customs reminiscent of Calpe and the Valencian Community.
