The FALLAS of Denia 2025: Magical party with grand finale on March 19

If you’re looking for a reason to visit Dénia in March, the Fallas will immediately convince you. The Fallas in Dénia are celebrated from 15 to 19 March, culminating in the spectacular “Cremà“, where the Fallas monuments burn in impressive bonfires. However, the magic begins much earlier. From the first days of March, the city comes alive with the plantà, when the Fallas commissions erect the cardboard and wood monuments they have been building throughout the year. These monuments are not simple sculptures; they are true works of art full of satire, humour and social criticism. Each Fallas tells a story, whether about politics, current events or culture, with cartoonish figures and ironic messages that invite reflection and laughter.

Why are Fallas celebrated in Dénia on the Costa Blanca?

Fallas have a deep cultural and festive meaning. Their original purpose was to burn the old to make way for the new, a tradition that over time was transformed into a great artistic and social spectacle.

Fallas in Dénia, as in the rest of the Valencian Community, are celebrated in honour of Saint Joseph (San Jose), patron saint of carpenters. It is believed that in the Middle Ages, carpenters burned the remains of wood they no longer needed in the streets, along with the lighting structures they used in winter. Over time, this custom evolved and the bonfires began to incorporate satirical and humorous figures made of wood and cardboard.

Fallas in Benidorm and Valencia

Fallas are also celebrated in Benidorm – Costa Blanca, although with less intensity than in Dénia or Valencia. The best-known Fallas are celebrated every year in Valencia. Today, this celebration of the Fallas in Valencia has become a great tourist attraction, since, in addition to having been recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest, in November 2016 UNESCO included it in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They are also known as the Josefinas or San José festivals, in honor of this saint, patron of carpenters, a very influential guild in the city since the end of the 19th century, when they began to be celebrated, and which has maintained its relevance thanks to the importance of the furniture industry in the region.
